Welcome to 6th grade science! You'll notice that this page is set up as a blog. I do my best to update it nearly every day with a summary of what we did in class, study skills assignments, extra enrichment, and important announcements. It is important for parents and students to check this page on a regular basis. On the right hand side, you will find the syllabus and instructions for accessing the online book.
Today, students began exploring cell organelles and their functions. Each group is learning about one of 8 organelles in depth, and will create a poster to present to the class tomorrow. The activity is attached.

Today, students observed plant and animal cells under a microscope and noted their similarities and differences. Tomorrow, we will learn more in depth about eukaryotic cell organelles.

First period then began comparing two different types of eukaryotic cells, plant and animal, through microscope investigations. Second and fourth periods did not get to this and will do this tomorrow.

I love the beginnings of new quarters because it is a chance for everyone to set a new goal and start working towards that goal. Remember that the two things most associated with high achievement in my class are in-class focus and effort, and at home studying. I must say, I was very impressed with everyone in 6th grade today - the effort and critical thinking you all put into your KWL questions was excellent! We are off to a fantastic start of our new quarter. Today we began the unit on cell structure and function. The statement and questions of inquiry for this unit are as follows: Statement of Inquiry: All living things are made of cells, which contain specialized structures that perform specific functions necessary to life. Factual Questions – What do cells look like? What are the different structures found in different types of cells? Conceptual Questiona – How do the different organelles function to carry out the processes of life? How could a problem with a cell’s functioning cause a larger problem for an entire body system? Debatable Question – To what extent, if any, should stem cells be used for research? This new unit will cover chapters 10 and 11 in the student textbooks. Vocabulary terms for chapter 10 are:

Today's ATL was Communication - exchanging thoughts, messages and information effectively through interaction. Students will use a variety of speaking techniques to present their classification projects.
Study Skills: To prepare for the next unit, please read chapter 10, lesson 1 in your books by next Monday. As mentioned on Friday, we will spend this coming week researching and putting together posters for your final project for the Classification of Life unit. The project will be worth a test grade, and I will also give you a classwork grade based on your daily effort. On Friday, each student was assigned a different organism to research. Below is the PowerPoint outlining the project expectations, which includes an example of what a finished poster would look like, and the rubric that I will use to grade the projects.
Today's ATL was the same as yesterday. Students finished reading Chapter 9 lesson 2 and completed their notes.
