Test will be as normally scheduled for periods 1 and 2 (Wednesday), and on Monday/Tuesday for period 4
Weather Test Review 1. Know the difference between maritime and continental and polar and tropical air masses. 2. Be able to identify high pressure and low pressure systems, and know what kind of weather is general associated with each. 3. Why are hurricanes worse than tornados? 4. What is the difference between weather and climate? 5. What is the relationship between air pressure and altitude? 6. What are the different weather instruments and what do they measure? 7. Relate weather to the water cycle. 8. What do clouds transport? 9. Describe how the different variables relate to each other. 10. Explain the concept of relative humidity and be able to apply it to examples. 11. What are the steps of a hurricane and what happens in each? 12. Explain how tornadoes form and why they are more likely to form in certain areas. 13. Explain the process of condensation as it relates to temperature changes This week, each class is on a different schedule due to testing, but all classes are working on Chapter 5, lesson 2 - Weather Patterns.
Study Skills: Review our notes and answer the questions below. air mass continental denser front high-pressure system hurricane lighter low-pressure system maritime occluded stationary thunder thunderstorm tornadoes tropical warm 1. A(n) is the most destructive storm on Earth. 2. A(n) forms when a large, high-pressure system lingers over an area for several days. 3. An example of a(n) air mass is a polar air mass that forms over the northern Atlantic Ocean. 4. A boundary between two air masses is a(n) . 5. In a(n) , rising air cools and water vapor condenses, forming clouds. 6. Cold air pushes underneath warm air because it is . 7. In a(n) front, warm air glides over cold air. 8. A(n) front forms when a fast-moving cold front catches up with a slow-moving warm front. 9. The first stage of a(n) is when clouds form; this is the cumulus stage. 10. Rapidly expanding air molecules near a bolt of lightning cause a sound that is referred to as . 11. Dry air masses that form over land are called air masses. 12. More occur in the United States than anywhere else. 13. An air mass that forms near the equator is a(n) air mass. 14. Other names for a(n) are tropical cyclone and typhoon. Periods 1 and 4 completed the Chapter 5, lesson 1 review on page 170 today.
Study Skills: For the quiz tomorrow, study all notes, prior study skills activities, and the lesson review. The following BrainPOP videos also will help you study for the quiz: https://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/weather/ https://www.brainpop.com/science/energy/temperature/ https://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/humidity/ https://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/watercycle/ Today, due to the testing schedule, 2nd period did not have science class. 1st and 4th period completed the chapter 5, lesson 1 launch lab, which modeled the water cycle, took notes on this lesson, and practiced analyzing the concept of relative humidity. We will work more on relative humidity tomorrow and review for Friday's quiz. Second period will have the Chapter 5 lesson 1 quiz next Wednesday. Today we began our new unit on weather and climate. The IB inquiry statements and questions for this unit are as follows:
Statement of Inquiry: Local weather patterns and global climate systems are consequences of natural movements, and can be influenced by human activities. Factual Question – What is the difference between weather and climate? Conceptual Questions – How do natural process cause weather and climate patterns? How can human activities influence these patterns? Debatable Question – What are some of the potential consequences of the changing global climate? Any students who did not finish reading Chapter 5, lesson 1, or writing the vocabulary terms in class will need to finish at home. Study Skills: Watch the following BrainPOP and take the quiz at the end (username: facc, password: facc33330) https://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/weather/ There will be a quiz on Chapter 5, lesson 1 on Friday. Today, classes finished their Earth's Systems summative project presentations. This week we will begin a new unit on Weather and Climate. We will begin this unit with chapter 5, weather. Vocabulary terms for this chapter are:
