I also want to post a few resources related to what we did in homeroom today during the testing window. We talked about how the IB learner profile relates to science by first completing The Marshmallow Challenge, which you can read more about here http://marshmallowchallenge.com/TED_Talk.html After the activity, we discussed the following:
1) Why was teamwork important to this activity, and what IB learner profile traits are important to good teamwork? (communicator and open minded)
2) What IB learner profile traits were important in order to be successful at this challenge (thinker - thinking outside the box to solve a problem, risk taker to try out different ideas)
3) What would you do differently next time (talk about most everyone's assumption that the marshmallow would be light, and how science is about challenging assumptions and then adjusting plans based on evidence)
4) Why do you think kindergartners did better than Harvard business school students? (they play around more, take more risks, creativity, spend less time planning)
After discussion, we watched the TED talk below about what science really is, and how a group of young kids got a scientific paper published in a reputable journal.
Though we won't be able to do these activities in all classes, I encourage everyone to check out what the marshmallow challenge is all about, and to watch the TED talk!
