Welcome to 6th grade science! You'll notice that this page is set up as a blog. I do my best to update it nearly every day with a summary of what we did in class, study skills assignments, extra enrichment, and important announcements. It is important for parents and students to check this page on a regular basis. On the right hand side, you will find the syllabus and instructions for accessing the online book.
This week we are working on forces and Newton's laws of motion, which corresponds to chapter 8, lesson 3 in the book. The test will be Friday. See the last post for the test review.

The chapter 8 test will be Friday, 5/29/15. Use the following as your study guide:
1. Know all vocabulary terms 2. Be able to calculate average speed (distance/time) 3. Be able to interpret and create both distance-time graphs and speed-time graphs 4. What is the difference between contact and noncontact forces? What are examples of each? 5. When are forces balanced? When are they unbalanced? 6. What happens when forces are balanced? What happens when they are unbalanced? 7. What two things does the amount of gravitational force exerted on an object depend on? 8. What is the relationship between net force and acceleration? 9. What effect does friction have on motion? 10. What is the difference between mass and weight? 11. Be able to explain Newton's 3 laws of motion. 12. What are the two factors used to describe a force? 13. What is inertia, and which of Newton's law's describes it? This week we have been working on graphing motion - specifically distance-time graphs (which show speed) and speed-time graphs (which show acceleration). Use the following worksheets for extra practice.
Quiz on calculating speed, graphing speed, and the lesson 1 vocab will be tomorrow 5/21 for periods 1 and 4 and Friday for period 2. The chapter 8 test is currently scheduled for next Wednesday 5/27, but I am looking into moving it to Thursday or Friday. I will update when I know for certain.
This week begins our forces and motion unit. The IB Inquiry information for this unit is: Statement of Inquiry: Humans manipulate interactions and balance of forces to control movement. Inquiry Questions: Factual Question – What are the ways to describe the motion of an object? Conceptual Question – How do forces affect the motion of an object? Debatable Question – What kind of safety regulations should contact sports such as football have? This unit corresponds to Chapter 8 in the book. Vocabulary for this chapter is: Lesson 1:

All classes have been working on the launch lab for lesson 1, notes, and a lab in which they are testing the average speed of different types of balls. Study Skills: Watch the Discovery Ed Video found on the following link (use your normal discoveryed login) https://app.discoveryeducation.com/search?Ntt=motion+%26+forces. Or, if you just log in to your discovery ed account and go to my assignments, you will see I have assigned you this video. Also, work on any or all of the attached worksheets (pick which one you find the most helpful)
The assessment for each class will be different for chapter 6. Period 1 will have a full test on all 3 lessons. Period 2 will have a test that includes only lessons 1 and 2, and period 4 will have a quiz on lesson 1 only. All of these will be on Monday. Use the following as your study guide outline (remember, period 1 needs to review all of this outline, period 2 only lessons 1 and 2, and period 4, only lesson 1)

What is the greenhouse effect and how are human activities increasing this effect? 2. Describe the effects of deforestation on greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. 3. What are fossil fuels and how does using them add to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere? 4. What are the environmental impacts of climate change? Period 1 created a foldable to organize their notes on short term climate cycles (chapter 6, lesson 2), period 2 finished the lesson on factors influencing climate and passed in the lesson review (chapter 6, lesson 1), and period 4 is still working on the activity on geographical factors that influence climate (chapter 6, lesson 1).
The chapter 6 test will be next Monday, May 11 and will include all 3 lessons for period 1, and only lessons 1 and 2 for period 4.
